Chairs and stools specifically designed for use in entrance halls and corridors were introduced in Britain shortly after 1700. They were particularly suitable for large, formal houses, where visitors and servants might wait in the hall. Their essential feature was a wooden seat, which could be cleaned easily.

Place of origin:Paris (made)

Artist/Maker:Sené, Jean-Baptiste-Claude (attributed to, menuisier)
Materials and Techniques:Carved walnut, painted white and grey and partly gilt, with modern silk upholstery and modern castors

At the top of this chair is carved the monogram MA for Marie-Antoinette, queen to Louis XVI of France. We do not know which of her palaces it comes from, although Sené supplied similar suites of chairs to her at the Château de Saint-Cloud, at Versailles and at the Tuileries. It resembles the Saint-Cloud set most closely, but where those chairs have a sphinx-head carved at the top of the arm-support, this chair has the head of the goddess Diana.

Stool
Place of origin:England (made)
Date:ca. 1800 (made)
Artist/Maker:Tatham, Charles Heathcote (designer)
Marsh & Tatham (probably, maker)

The design of the stool closely follows that of a marble seat in an unspecified location in Rome. Here the stool is made from beech wood, painted in white and grey to simulate the appearance of marble. Beech wood would have been much easier and less costly to carve than marble, and resulted in a more flexible seat which weighed less and could be moved around without difficulty.
